The Power Behind a Portrait // How a Photograph Can Change Your Perspective

Photographers have the ability to showcase people in a way that they may not usually see themselves. Bringing out their raw beauty and emotion is why I absolutely LOVE photographing people! No fancy tricks, just good lighting and a connection can make all the difference.

While I was at Help-Portrait in December of 2022, I had the honor to photograph this man. When he first walked into my portrait station I could tell he was unsure if he'd even like his image.

After a few clicks of the camera we walked over to my computer to look at his photos, and something changed.

He said "that's not me... what?!? that's not me..."

I feel like he was able to see himself through my eyes.

As he looked at the portrait, I could tell he felt a sense of pride and self-acceptance... so much so that about 10 minutes later he came back and we captured this portrait.

Human connection is what portrait photography is all about! Bringing out the absolute best in someone, and at times, giving them a whole new perspective on how the world sees them is inspiring and rewarding.

The lighting for my station at Help-Portrait was super simple and consisted of a single flash modified with a large umbrella and diffusion fabric. This gave a soft, even, spread of light that was flattering for everyone that stopped by for a portrait.
