Family portraits should be as unique as the people that they are featuring! Every family is different and has its own aesthetic. Tapping into their personal style is a great way to incorporate what they love with who they love!
My client, L. Ashley Canter, wanted her annual family photos to match their aesthetic. Being a luxury interior designer, Ashley has an eye for things that stand out for all the right reasons. When discussing the shoot, Ashley provided some really key inspiration photos to help direct the images she was looking to have created. A luxury/editorial vibe was our overall goal for each of the looks that we would be doing.
We started their session at a nearby park early in the morning to take advantage of the beautiful morning light. Sometimes, a little bribery (like fruit snacks) goes a long way when getting younger kids to cooperate.
Our second location was their home and our first look there was inspired by a photo that Ashley had found on Instagram. Not only was it more relaxing for the family, but it was also a lot of fun to shoot as well!
Our final look was in the family's living room. With Ashley being a fantastic interior designer, I knew it would be the perfect setting for an iconic family portrait. With a quick outfit change and some rearranging of the furniture, I was able to capture the family in an elevated version of their everyday life!
Below are three questions that you can ask your client to help navigate the conversation and learn more about how they are looking to make their family photos unique!
1. WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY?
2. HOW WILL YOU BE USING THE FINAL IMAGES (i.e. social media posts, holiday cards, prints, etc.)?
3. IS THERE A PARTICULAR STYLE OR VIBE THAT YOU ARE GOING FOR?
The lighting for all three looks was super simple and consisted of a single flash modified with a large umbrella and diffusion fabric. This gave a soft, even, spread of light that worked well in each scenario.
