You’ve heard it a bajillion times, “Teamwork makes the dream work,” however it couldn’t be more true! I wholeheartedly believe that having a great time makes for an even greater end product. While lighting, technical skills, social skills, and creativity all play a large part in bringing a concept to life, having a professional wardrobe stylist and makeup artist provide that finishing touch to help pull everything together.
I’ve worked with my friend, Emily Goodin – www.emilygoodinstyles.com – for years now and I’m so fortunate to have her on set. Not only does she discuss the details with me but often times she will meet with the subject we are photographing prior to the shoot to discuss styling services or even go on a pre-shoot shopping trip.
Utilizing a wardrobe stylist helps take some things off of your plate as a photographer as well. Depending on your shoot, you can always give your own guidance as to what you want your client to wear. For example, if it is a standard headshot session you may suggest to your client that they avoid busy patterns that could be distracting. On larger shoots or those where wardrobe plays a bigger role, a stylist will ensure that colors, textures, patterns, and fit will all coordinate with your vision. When your client looks good, they feel good, and a wardrobe stylist will help bring out their confidence even more!
Below are three things from Emily that you should consider when hiring a wardrobe stylist:
ONE – WHY SHOULD YOU HIRE A STYLIST?
Your client’s wardrobe can either make or break an entire shoot! Let’s be honest—what looks good in someone’s closet might not translate on camera. We can all agree that clothing is one of the most important parts of a photoshoot, yet most don’t spend enough time making sure it’s perfect. A professional wardrobe stylist will help your client choose the best outfit for each shoot and avoid last-minute scrambles.
TWO – WHAT SHOULD A PHOTOGRAPHER LOOK FOR WHEN HIRING A STYLIST?
A truly experienced wardrobe stylist is highly knowledgeable about fashion and can put your clients in clothes that fit their body type and personality. It is very important to hire someone with on-set experience, a broad portfolio of different styles, and experience working with males and females.
THREE – WHAT ELEMENTS, OTHER THAN STYLING, CAN A STYLIST BRING TO A SHOOT?
A professional stylist with on-set experience will see any garment (or items) that are out of place in the shot. While you’re busy setting up the shot, you may not notice a hair out of place or a gaping blouse. This can cause some major headaches in editing…and could even ruin the shot! Have you ever had that EPIC shot and then realized there’s something out of place that causes you not to be able to use the image? A stylist can act as your right hand when it comes to making sure the shot is perfect for you and your client. It also makes things less awkward with adjustments to garments. Stylists are specifically there to make sure everything is where it’s supposed to be! A seasoned stylist can also provide a unique, creative perspective on shot angles and the best placement for making sure the client looks their best.
We are in the business of making people feel absolutely amazing and adding in a wardrobe stylist does just that! Guess what? When they feel amazing they love their photos more too. It’s a WIN for the client, a WIN for the wardrobe stylist, and a WIN for you and your business. CHA-CHING!
