How To Light Individuals & Groups for e-Commerce

Photographing for e-commerce doesn't have to be complicated! Each brand, or company, may vary on how they wish to have their images taken for the web. You can never go wrong with clean and even light for product shots.

AIM apparel offers handcrafted products that bring freedom to women around the world. With each purchase, customers help rescue women who are being sold and protect them from being trafficked again through safe employment.

With this particular shoot, we had a lot of products to photograph in a limited amount of time. To help keep things moving, I decided to set up two stations, one for group photos and a second for individuals.

If y'all have seen my work before, you know I love a moody portrait but this wasn't the time or the place haha. I opted to use multiple umbrellas, with and without diffusion fabric, to give me clean and even light. This made the products and my subjects look their best. The light spread across each space evenly, and the silver interior of the umbrella gave a little bit more of a pop than you would find with a typical white-lined umbrella.

You'll notice a shadow on the background in the group photo. This was something the client had asked for to show some depth and dimension in the image. An easy fix would be to add in an additional light that is used specifically on the background. If you don't have an additional light handy, you can always bring your models closer to the background, along with your light source.
